During my five years living in South Africa, I learned the Zulu language to connect with many strong young women, inspiring the creation of Thandeka, a character whose clay bust is adorned with a symbolic collar. This collar, made of metal shaped using the emboss technique, signifies the societal constraints she fought against. As a single mother and member of the Zulu community, Thandeka lived by the Ubuntu philosophy, "I am because we are," emphasizing community interdependence. Moving to the big city for her children's education, she faced new challenges but maintained her belief in Ubuntu, forming supportive bonds in her new environment. Thandeka's story showcases her resilience and leadership, underscoring that one is never truly alone through the spirit of community.
